The Kappa Youth Leadership & Development League is a program designed to aid young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. This national initiative commonly referred to as “Kappa League,” is a program for the educational, occupational and social guidance of male students in grades 6th-12th. Applications for 2024-2025 open from May 15-May31st

About Kappa League

Kappa League was founded on February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., at Alain LeRoy Locke High School. Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the 56th Grand Chapter which was held August 12-15, 1970. The founders of the Kappa Instructional Leadership League were Mel L. Davis an Elder Watson Diggs Awardee and Edgar H. Bishop

Goals

  • For each young man to discover his unique skills and abilities in order to find and fulfill his purpose in life
  • Prepare young men (particularly those of color) to become leaders of impact and influence
  • Promote academic achievement by encouraging enrollment in honors and advanced placement (AP) courses
  • To obtain 100 % high school graduation and collegiate/trade school acceptance rates
  • Train Kappa Leaguers to become role models of positive change for other youth within their school and community


The 7 Phases of Kappa League

Through club-oriented activities, the officers and member of the Kappa League perform projects that simulate good leadership characteristics designed to raise their aspiration levels. All activities and programs are taken from one or more of the following phases:

Phase II - Training
Phase III - Competition
Phase IV - Social
Phase V - Health Education
Phase VI - Economic Empowerment & Education
Phase VII - College & Career

What is Kappa League?
The national service program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is called Guide Right. The purpose of the Guide Right program is to place the training experience and life lessons of successful men at the disposal of youth for educational and occupational guidance, primarily inspirational and informational in character. 

The Kappa League is a program designed to aid young men of high school age to grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. Kappa League provides both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives.
Is there a cost to sign a child up for Kappa League?
All dues must be paid by October 1, 2024. Payments can be made via Zelle to KOE@BLINupes.org. Please note your KL’s name in the notes. 

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, or are unable to meet this deadline for any reason, please contact Shawn Mason to discuss your specific circumstances. 

Annual dues, in the amount of $125, include the following: 

1. Kappa League patch to be worn in their Blazer 
2. Bowtie or tie 
3. Pin 
4. Admission to the National Kappa League Conference.  The costs for trips, activities, and programming will be communicated to parents and guardians as they arise.
What are the Program Requirements?
Attendance at monthly Kappa League programming is mandatory. If your child has extenuating circumstances that prevent them from attending regularly, please contact Shawn Mason to discuss further. 

Please note that regular attendance at monthly programming is required in order to participate in trips and special events. Kappa Leaguers must not miss more than FIVE programming events to remain in good standing. 
How are Parents involved?
Announcements and other communications are shared in the Parent and Kappa League WhatsApp groups. Please ensure that both you and your Kappa Leaguer are added to the appropriate group to stay abreast of any announcements regarding your child and program activities. 

You must acknowledge receipt of announcements from the group admins. Posting of non-program related items requires approval from an admin (Shawn Mason, Lillian Vega, or Roland Williams before posting) 

Parents and guardians are expected to actively participate in KL activities.

This includes: Attending events Providing lunch for Saturday programming on a rotational basis Actively assist with fundraising efforts
